~ Salutation

Tit 1:1  [From] Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God's elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness;

Tit 1:2  In [resting on the] hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;

Tit 1:3  But [God] hath in due times [at His appointed time] manifested his word through [the] preaching, which is committed [entrusted] unto me [Paul] according to the commandment of God our Saviour;

Tit 1:4  To Titus, mine own son after the [in our] common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour.

~ Paul, as an Apostle, moves on, leaving behind Titus, as the Bishop of the island of Crete, to perform unfinished tasks, including the ordaining of Elders in every city on the island of Crete.  This implies that the goal is to have a congregation (church) in each city, and each congregation (church) having its own Ordained Elders.

Tit 1:5  For this cause [reason] left I [Paul] thee [you, Titus, as bishop] in Crete, that thou [Titus] shouldest set in order the things that are wanting [unfinished], and ordain elders in every city, as I [Paul, as an apostle] had appointed thee [Titus, as a bishop, to do]:

~ Qualifications of Ordained Elders

Tit 1:6  [To ordain elders] If any [, elders must] be blameless, the husband of [but] one wife, having faithful children [believers] not accused of riot [being wild] or unruly [disobedient].

~ Qualifications, Duties, and Roles of a Bishop

Tit 1:7  [Paul speaking to Titus, a bishop:] For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled [overbearing], not soon angry [quick-tempered], not given to wine [drunkenness], no striker [not violent], not given to filthy lucre [money, dishonest gain];

Tit 1:8  But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober [self-controlled], just [upright], holy, temperate [disciplined];

Tit 1:9  Holding fast [to] the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort [encourage others] and to convince the gainsayers [those who oppose it].

~ Some Challenges facing Bishop Titus (within his region, which is the island of Crete)
~ ( These are common issues facing all congregations (churches) on the island of Crete )

Tit 1:10  For there are many unruly [rebellious] and vain [mere] talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision [Jews]:

Tit 1:11  Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses [families], [by] teaching things which they ought not [to teach], for filthy lucre's [money's, dishonest gain's] sake.

Tit 1:12  One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said, The Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies [lazy gluttons].

Tit 1:13  This witness [testimony] is true.  Wherefore [Therefore] rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith;

Tit 1:14  Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from [reject] the truth.

Tit 1:15  Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled [corrupted].

Tit 1:16  They profess that they know God; but in works [actions] they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate [unfit].
